Professor Maria Mimikou

Maria Mimikou is Professor Emeritus in the School of Civil Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens. She has established the Center of Hydrology and Informatics (CHI). She has a vast experience (35 years) in the areas of water resources management, water resources systems planning and operation, urban, rural and coastal hydrology, stochastic hydrology, hydrological and water quality modeling, soil erosion and sediment transport, climate change and land use change at the catchment scale, flood forecasting, risk assessment and mapping as well as water scarcity and drought analysis. She has written several books and has authored or co-authored more than 60 papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals and more than 80 peer-reviewed publications in national and international conferences, while she has published several scientific technical reports.

Prof. Mimikou has coordinated several undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the School of Civil Engineering and has supervised 30 graduate diplomas and 55 postgraduate theses, while during her recent (5-year) doctoral supervising activities, 2 PhD theses have been completed and 3 are still in progress. She has a vast academic and nonacademic administrative experience. She has served as Director of the Hydrology Section of the Public Power Corporation. She has served as Dean of the School of Civil Engineering of NTUA, as Director of the Laboratory of Hydrology and Water Resources Management and as Director of the Department of Water Resources and Environmental Engineering. She is experienced in the management of research programs and has been scientific responsible and administrator of European competitive research programs of total (NTUA) funding about 5.300.000€ and coordinator and scientific responsible of other European competitive programs of total funding about 8.900.000€. Also, she has served as a member of External Advisory Groups in DG Research, as Chairman and member of steering and organizing committees in several conferences, as member of different European scientific networks like EurAqua, EXCIFF etc, while she has established the national academic network on Hydrology and Water Resources «HYDROMEDON».

She has also offered engineering consultant services in the fields of her expertise to the EU, Greek Ministries, public organizations and private companies. She has been the scientific responsible of numerous competitive EU (more than 30) and national funded programs related to the integrated water resources management: EPI, i-adapt, SPI-Water, ETC/W, FLADAR, OpenMI-Life, MEDDMAN, FLOODMED, ENRICH, EUROHARP, CHESS etc.

She is actively involved in the implementation of the Water Framework Directive (member of the EU-WFD Working Groups) and the Flood Directive in Greece towards the development of an integrated water resources management plan linked to the River Basin Management Plans. Her current efforts and interests are focused on increasing the cost-effectiveness of measures and interventions implemented at the catchment scale for meeting the quantity and quality objectives of surface and groundwater bodies required by the environmental legislation.
