Introduction
The sector of Environment and specially water resources management is one of the major problems that Greece is facing. Taking into account that Mediterranean regions are influenced by a climate change characterized by drought tendency, it is obvious that water resources must be considered as top priority.
Many cooperating agents of the public sector manage up to now, the water resources in Greece. Despite their coordinated efforts, so far there is no uniform registry of data and information that could serve as a basis for a optimum policy of management.
Knowing the consequences of such omission, the Ministry of Environment, Planning and Public Works assigned, after an open competition, the National Technical University, with the implementation of the project "National Data Bank of Hydrological and Meteorological Information" (NDBHMI).
Objectives
Sententiously, the objectives of the project are:
- Inventory, quality control and homogeneity of the existing hydrological, meteorological and hydrogeological data and creation of the respective data base
- Adjustment to the database of appropriate software applications so that the combination of information and the deduction of results concerning evaluation, control and planning of management and infrastructure projects, is feasible
- Link of the NDBHMI through networking systems with all interesting services and users
Work Packages:
- Data entry (Images 1,2)
- Data processing (Image 3)
- Software development (Image 4)
- Geographical Information Systems (GIS) (Images 5,6,7,8)
- Network of gauging stations
- Training - Support
- Evolution Study
Sectors where the contribution of NDBHMI is fundamental:
- Planning of sewage networks
- Planning of reservoirs and ponds
- Design and construction of public works such as bridges and roads
- Prediction of climate change
- Delineation of flood prone regions
- Evaluation of Water Balances and hydropotential in the water districts of the country
- Quality and quantity control of groundwater
Partners
The following agents are cooperating for the implementation of the project:
- Ministry of Environment, Planning and Public Works
- National Meteorological Service
- Public Power Corporation
- Ministry of Agriculture
- Ministry of Development
- National Observatory of Athens
