Yannis Panagopoulos

Yiannis Panagopoulos is researcher at the Centre for Hydrology and Informatics in the School of Civil Engineering of NTUA. He holds a Bachelor in Natural Resources Management and Agricultural Engineering from the Agricultural University of Athens, an MSc in Water Resources Science and Technology from NTUA and a PhD in Hydrology and Non-Point Source Surface Water Pollution from NTUA. He has been involved in many EU research projects, including MARS, i-adapt, Euroharp, COST Action 869. He has investigated water quantity and quality issues within a river basin management context and under climate change conditions. He has organized participatory modelling activities via direct communication and consultation of stakeholders within several case studies, as well as, he has coordinated interdisciplinary groups of people for the formulation of programs of agricultural measures and the assessment of their cost-efficiency in tackling water problems. For example, he has had a leading role in making economic assessments of alternative management practices, testing practices and economic policy instruments, and optimizing their selection and application within large agricultural landscapes. He has also conducted research in NSF (National Science Foundation) and USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) projects focusing on the sustainable management of the Mississippi river basin in the Midwestern USA. Currently, he is involved in the EU research project MARS (Managing aquatic ecosystems and water resources under multiple stress), where he is leading two Tasks (Multi-stressor framework in the European Southern basins, E-flow assessment at the European scale) and a Work Package (European matrix of stress and impact). He has published several scientific articles in peer-review journals and international conferences and is a reviewer of several scientific journals, specialized in topics of environmental management. His academic / scientific profile also includes important teaching experience on water related courses at NTUA and coordination as moderator of water related sessions in national and international conferences.
