The EUROTAS project (European River Flood Occurrence & Total risk Assessment System) is directed at the development and demonstration of integrated catchment models for the assessment and mitigation of flood risk and the development of appropriate modelling and management procedures. An Integrated Catchment Modelling framework (ICM) is a new development of tools and functionalities able to manage the potentially voluminous number of data sets required by the state of the art hyhrological and hydraulic models.

At the heart of the project lie the case studies. The Greek case study is the Pinios river basin (Image 1), aiming to provide background information for the development of the assessment and management procedures. A monthly water balance model (WBUDG) was calibrated and applied for the Pinios basin. Several runs simulated the water balance of the catchment under present and changed climatic conditions. So far, two climate change scenarios were used, the UKHI and HadCM2. For the study of the flood occurrence, a model with a daily time step, SWAT, has been calibrated, for the Pinios catchment. Additionally, a Decision Support System (DSS) comprising of procedures related to flood risk assessment, climate and land use change will provide a powerful tool assisting water managers to answer real scientific and practical issues on the changing nature of flood risk.
